Memories of Childhood Vacations #SensationalMemories

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Arm & Hammer. The opinions and text (plus old summer photos and childhood vacation memories) are all mine.

Spending the summer with my mom and dad and my sister’s family of seven has certainly brought back memories of the summers that we used to spend together when we were all (much) younger. Yes, being around my family brings back a ton of memories, but so does scent. It doesn’t matter where I am or what time of year it is. When I smell pine, I am transported back to my summers at Lake Tahoe.

Every childhood summer that I can remember was spent lounging around the beach in Tahoe, riding around on my uncle’s boat, fishing with my dad, floating on the crystal clear water, hiking pine-laden trails, and relaxing at the cabin.

Summers at Lake Tahoe were perfect.

Most people associate the scent of pine with Christmas trees, but I think of summer.

PS – family photos from Summers of 1986 and 1987. I’m the older child…

Did you know that scent is the single most powerful memory-trigger? What scents trigger memories for you? Do you think of your grandma when you smell lavender? I think of Grandma when I smell spray starch, because she LOVED to iron (everything from shirts to bed sheets…yes, with starch!).

Arm & Hammer Laundry, partnering with the National Park Foundation, has recently launched a detergent collection with scents inspired by nature. A&H Laundry’s new detergent line Clean Scentsations, with 3 options with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, give your laundry the clean and fresh scent of the great outdoors AND help get out all your dirt and stinky odors. Find out more about Clean Scentsations here.

Would you LOVE to make new family vacation memories by winning a trip to Yosemite National Park with an “expert-curated travel itinerary”? You can enter the Sensational Memories Contest by submitting a story and photo (if available) describing a favorite memory of traveling that can be recalled from a simple scent. Enter HERE!

BONUS: Scholastic is partnering with Arm & Hammer to provide families with 20 Great Outdoor Trip Ideas. Check out the Smart Family Travel platform to find out where (and why) to go, what to do, where to stay at each destination, with fun family-friendly activities at each location, and printables to teach kids about where they’ll be visiting.

With all of the traveling my family has been doing this summer, I can attest that the kids LOVE to read about a location (history, cool facts, and what to do) before we visit. I am loving this new resource from Scholastic and A&H!
