Milk Unleashed: Benefits of Shelf Safe Milk

Friday, December 14, 2012 by Lolli Leave a Comment

cowshelfBump into me at the grocery store and I can guarantee that you will find a cart full of milk. Our family of seven goes through an average of 5-6 gallons of milk a week…and that’s with 5 of them out of the house from breakfast until 3 in the afternoon.

We like to drink milk.

What we don’t like is drinking rotten milk, having milk spill all over a backpack after being put in a container that was not air tight, throwing away perfectly good water bottles that have been used to store milk (and then forgotten and not cleaned…you get the picture), or wasting milk because the lunch bag ice pack was not cold enough.

Get the picture? We like milk, but gallons of milk don’t make friendly lunch companions.

And then don’t get me started on our road trips. Again, we like to drink milk, but carrying a gallon of milk in a cooler as we drive down to Florida is not ideal.

What is Shelf Safe Milk?

The idea of shelf safe milk is not foreign to me, as I have lived briefly in a few countries where milk is always stored on the shelf. In fact, shelf safe milk has been around since the 1960s. What I just learned, though, is that shelf safe milk is REAL MILK with no additives or preservatives.

It’s just Grade A nutritious milk (full of vitamins A, D, B12, as well as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, riboflavin, niacin and zinc) that has gone through ultra pasteurization and has been packaged in special Tetra Pak eco-friendly cartons. The result is milk that can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime.

Shelf safe milk is perfect for:

  • school lunches
  • diaper bags
  • food storage (for those times you run out of milk and can’t make it to the store right away)
  • snacks
  • purses
  • road trips
  • breakfast at the office
  • any on-the-go activities you can think of

What is “Milk Unleashed”?

Milk Unleashed is a campaign to educate parents about shelf safe milk as well as remind families about the importance of including dairy in their diets. The Milk Unleashed website is packed with information: nutritional facts about milk, easy ways to incorporate more milk into your families’ diets, plus promotions, contests and information about brands of shelf safe milk and where to buy them.

We are definitely going to reintroduce milk into the school lunches again. AND I’ll never have to worry about crying kids at 7:00 am because we’ve run out of milk for cereal.

I may have to deal with crying kids for other reasons, but the milk situation is covered…
