Second Chances

Monday, September 20, 2010 by Lolli 1 Comment

I haven’t always made the best first impressions. In fact, I determined early in my teen years that my odd combination of self confidence and shyness did not give most people a good impression of me. I’ve always been quiet, but not in a timid, self-conscious way. I just prefer to sit back and quietly observe. My mind, unfortunately, works quite a bit faster than my tongue, and I consistently find myself coming up with the ideal response or the perfect comeback long after a conversation is over. So I chose to be quiet.

girls camp 1986

The summer when I was 12, I attended a week-long girls camp in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. I had a blast. Hiking, canoeing, singing camp fire songs, gabbing at night with my bunk mates. At the end of the week, as I was saying good-bye to my new friends, one girl approached me and told me, “You know–at the beginning of the week, I thought you were really stuck up, but now that I’ve gotten to know you, I realize that you are not that way at all. You’re just nice. And quiet.”

Granted, this girl had no tact. Even at 12, I could tell that. But her words sunk in and I was forever more aware of the first impressions I was leaving. Thank goodness for second chances.

soyjoySOYJOY baked soy and fruit bars have recently revealed a whole new, improved product. The new SOYJOY is more moist, and more filled with fruit. It is still rich in protein, fiber, antioxidants, and B vitamins and has 140 calories or less. SOYJOY sent me some bars to sample, including their newest flavors blueberry and banana, which have been super helpful to have around on busy mornings. While I am not a huge banana fan (and doesn’t it figure, since bananas are one of the few fruits I am not allergic to in their fresh form), I loved both blueberry and strawberry. Although I had never tested the “old” SOYJOY, I was impressed with the taste and texture of the new bars. While they are no candy bar, they are incredibly good for a healthy, soy, gluten-free snack.

In celebration of second chances on making a first impression, SOYJOY has launched the “Second Chances” contest. Visitors to SOYJOY’s Facebook page can enter to win one of three $1,000 prizes by briefly telling their own personal story about a time they did not make the best first impression but, with a second chance, turned it into a joyous ending. I’ll be entering (I can certainly use an extra $1000!). Will you?

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of SOYJOY and received samples of their nutritional bars to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central also sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate. The SOYJOY Second Chances contest is running now through October 3.

People always got the impression I was too proud growing up, when they got to know me they realized I was just awkward and quiet.

    Found you on Mom Loop!
