Bloggography Challenge – Shutter Speed

Bloggography at Better in Bulk

Visit my co-host, Manic Mother!

In Bloggography Challenge tradition, I have picked one of my favorite images from our last challenge (ISO). I simply loved Kristin of Beautiful Noise‘s sequence of photos of Mickey Mouse’s plane.

Mickey's Plane by Kristin

————————————–

Last week’s Bloggography tutorial was on Shutter Speed, and we challenged you to use shutter priority (or sports mode) to capture an action shot. Any action is fine–you can freeze the action, or purposely blur it to show movement. How did you do on your challenge?

Like I’ve mentioned several times in the last month, we’ve had more than our fair share of snow this Winter. While these shots aren’t perfect, I love the action I was able to catch while my kids (Necco in the red hat and Twizzler in the orange coat) jumped off of a few of the snow piles left behind by the snow plows in our court. I used a shutter speed of 1/1000 to stop their motion–in mid-air! (FYI–my ISO was set to 400, and aperture was f/8)

**In the spirit of sharing photography, we have a fantastic giveaway to add to today’s challenge. A local DC-area photographer, Steven L Miller, has offered one of my readers an 8×10 matted photo from his website, slmphoto.com. Please click on the Print Giveaway Post to enter!

We’ll be posting some of our favorite shots from this week’s challenge in two weeks. Will we pick yours?

And now for the sharing of photos:

By the way, I didn’t link up because I haven’t formally done the challenge. But I wanted to let you know how much your tutorials are helping me. The picture I took of Nathan today (in the link below) is in manual mode and I was so proud. I had it in the shutter priority mode because he is always moving and I kept changing and clicking until I got what I like. Then changed the iso and voila…I feel like I am finally learning! Thank you again

I had a feeling that was going to be your answer! LOL…yes, they turned out great!!……I have a friend who’s asked me to take some family pics while all of her kids are home this weekend…and she wants them in the snow…….I’m SOOO nervous! I know she’s not expecting a lot out of me, really she just wants some pictures, nothing “out of this world”…..but I expect something “out of this world” LOL Thanks for replying! ?

It’s funny that you should ask that, because when I looked back at these pictures after taking them, I asked myself the same question–why did I use ISO 400? My best guess is that I had it set to 400 for some previous shots that were darker and literally forgot to set it lower. I know–that’s a terrible example, isn’t it? I would typically use 200 or lower for a sunny day like that. However, I don’t think 400 turned out bad. I was very happy with the color, etc.

GREAT shot Lolli………I have a question (I’ve really been trying to work on outside shots in the sun and snow)….why did you have you’re ISO at 400 why not lower? I love how beautiful all of your colors showed up….including the sky…..I’ve been playing with my aperture and shutter speeds trying to get right settings, but I always have my ISO on 200 (the lowest my camera goes)….so I’m wondering if there is a reason for the ISO 400?
