The McClain Sisters – Family Comes First

Friday, April 20, 2012 by Lolli 5 Comments

I instantly felt a connection with these three beautiful sisters – Sierra (18), Lauryn (15), and China (13) McClain – better known as the McClain Sisters. There was something about their interaction with one another that endeared them to me and let me know right off the bat that they would fit in with my brood perfectly.

After our interview, I went up to Sierra, Lauryn, and China and told them about my own 13 and 15 year old daughters, and how much they reminded me of my girls. Their reaction? All three of them gave me a huge hug. If it hadn’t been so spontaneous, I might have caught a picture of the moment. Instead, these girls earned a permanent place in my heart.

The McClain Sisters may be gorgeous, uber-talented, and famous, but at the core of it all, they are sisters, and everything about our interview with them told me that they have a strong, supportive family, full of faith and fun.

The McClain Sisters

The importance of being CLOSE

One of the things that stood out the most to me was their discussion about sharing rooms. Lauryn and China say that they have shared a room “pretty much their whole lives.” Here’s what they had to say about it:

“We like staying in smaller environments,” Lauryn said, “because it would be weird if we didn’t hear another kid down the hall yelling.”

“Yeah,” Sierra added. “And you know, we say we want our space, but then we’ll be on the phone with each other in the same room, or on FaceTime.”

“Or she’ll come and just sit in our room, lay in my bed, and…” said China.

“It’s very random,” said Lauryn. “It’s a random household, but it’s a fun household too.”

The McClain Sister talk about staying grounded

All three sisters immediately responded that their parents keep them grounded.

“We have really good parents,” said one of the girls. “From the very beginning, they always taught us to always stay humble and you know, always remember what you were taught and always have faith in what you believe in — We have each other, but our parents are mostly how we stay grounded, ’cause they always stay on us and they don’t let us get away with anything.”

The McClain Sisters share the key message that they’d like to portray to young children

Family unity and loyalty was the key message that these sisters wanted to share with youth. Sierra piped in: “Well, I have three siblings — two sisters and a brother — so I would definitely tell kids to stick close and to love each other, and to always be there for each other, because you know our mom always taught us, my dad too, but my mom definitely taught us is that friends, they come and go sometimes, but your sisters are gonna always be there for you. No matter what.”

The McClain Sisters and bloggers

See Sierra, Lauryn, and China perform “RISE” at the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Awards ceremony shortly before our interview last Friday:

Don’t forget to see CHIMPANZEE this weekend – it opened today! Remember that a portion of your ticket sales during this first week (4/20-4/26) will be donated to the Jane Goodall Institute.

Disclosure: This interview experience was part of an expense-paid trip to Florida, where we were able to attend the premiere of Disneynature’s Chimpanzee, among many other exciting adventures. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
