The Need to Travel

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by Lolli Leave a Comment

I used to travel back home to California at least once a year. I would tote all of my little kids on the plane with me – each child had a backpack full of snacks, a sippy cup, books, blanket, and paper and crayons to keep them busy during the flight.

I would manage the toddlers in the seats next to me while nursing the baby on my lap. There was always a baby.

Just thinking about traveling with small children now makes me tired. But as much of a hassle as I knew the travel day would be with my little ones, and as often as CandyMan would tell me that I was crazy to fly 8 hours across the country with babies, it was worth it to me.

Vacation as a young mom was not about destination. It was about relaxation.

It wasn’t until I got off the plane and into my mom’s van that I would finally – FINALLY – be able to relax. I knew that if I could make it through the long flight from DC to California that I would have the mental break I needed. Grandma’s house was the only place in the entire world where I could take off my Mommy hat and just be me. Sure, I still had to put kids to bed at night and tote them along on errands, but the presence of my mom always calmed me.

And then my kids got bigger, their schedules got busier, and their plane tickets became more expensive. It wasn’t as easy to travel back home anymore.

Now, instead of dragging all of my kids on vacation with me, I fly out to blogging conferences by myself and spend a week each year at my mom’s house…without the kids. The kids might not be as happy with it, but the trips away do the trick. I can’t wait for my next Mommy Trip, coming in just one week. I’ll be heading to Type-A Conference in North Carolina on Wednesday.

I couldn’t need the break more.

Do you need a break, too?
