The Truth About Amusement Parks

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 by Lolli 14 Comments

When your children are nicknamed KitKat, Twizzler, Reese, AlmondJoy, {and one other non-Hershey candy}, Hershey Park really IS the most perfect place on earth. Yes, we’ve been home from our trip to Hershey, PA for a week and a half….but this is the first chance I’ve had to show off some of the pictures from our Park day.

Last year, I learned a few things during our visit to Hershey Park. I learned to appreciate the air conditioned restrooms, and I learned the value of those enormous souvenir cups. I did not, however, learn how to spell souvenir. It’s one of those words that I have to look up on dictionary.com every single time.

I learned a few new things about amusement parks this year. It finally clicked that:

  1. Amusement Parks are not for parents. They are for kids. Kids have fun and parents spend money and get blisters and back aches.
  2. Sunglasses are a necessary accessory.
  3. Every drop of beverage is worth the money.
  4. Strollers are required, regardless of the ages of your kids. You’ve got to have some place to put all the stuff (towels, changes of clothes, snacks, drinks) that you have to carry around the park.
  5. Having everyone pee before getting in the long lines is a good idea.
  6. Get the important stuff over with in the beginning of the day, because you’ll never be able to fit it in later on.
  7. Always keep a park map on hand. Fifteen minutes before the park closes is not a great time to be running around trying to find the ferris wheel.
  8. Wear good shoes (for that last minute run to the opposite side of the park to catch that last ride)
  9. I never could have survived as a parent at an amusement park in pre-cell phone days.
  10. Be sure to write down the section you parked in before leaving the car for the day.

The truth is, all of the money, back ache, and sacrifice is worth the smiles and the memories. Yep. I’m sure we’ll be going back next year. Happily.

One last picture just for fun. The day before our Hershey Park visit, we cooled off in my sister’s pool. I don’t know where these “let’s open our eyes underwater!” kids came from!

OMG a park with the main feature being chocolate…where’s Pensylvania, I’m on the next plane there…ok, not really, but my mouth is watering at the prospect. Thanks for the tips on amusement parks, I’ll be needing them, we’re doing Disney for the first time and I’m daunted, to say at the very least, by the prospect of 10 hours on my feet in the hot Florida sun in August!

fun photos and great words of advise. I would add to pack munchies for the kids because every time someone is hungry kills a good 45 minutes of your very expensive day. :)

Haven’t gone the amusement park route yet, but I will refer to your expertise if I ever get there. (More likely is I will send my kids with Sarah and her kids and stay home with a cold beverage by my side!)

LOVE the pics! Looks like the kids had a great time…and admit it, so did you. I took Katie to Great Adventure Thurs for her birthday and having her tell me on the ride home that it was the best day of her life just makes every other little detail worth it.
