Our New Valentine’s Day Traditions #SendMoreLove

Sunday, February 2, 2014 by Lolli 2 Comments

This post brought to you by Treat.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

I loved Valentine's Day when I was a kid. I recall carefully choosing the best Valentine-out-of-a-box for each of my classmates and then writing their names next to TO: and my name next to FROM:…

My childhood Valentine’s Day traditions consisted of a party in class, which meant candies and treats and less work.

When I met my husband, Valentine’s Day had a new meaning. But as neither of us have much of a sappy side, we kept Valentine's Day very practical. I would cook a special dinner and we would exchange humorous cards and maybe a small gift.

And then kids came. For many years, nothing changed, but as soon as the kids started school, Valentine's Day began resembling those old holidays from my childhood: generic cards from a box, addressed to all the kids in the class, chocolate, and parties.

It wasn't until a few years ago (literally) that I realized that my kids wanted more out of Valentine's Day. My kids started asking why WE didn't celebrate Valentine's Day.

"Of course we celebrate Valentine's Day," I told them. "I buy you the boxes of cards and we fill them out to give out to your class." I wanted to add, "What more do you want from me?" In my mind, Valentine's Day was a holiday for little kids in school and for people romantically involved. Why would I do anything special for my kids for Valentine's Day?

I'll tell you the answer to that question: I now make Valentine's Day special for my kids because it is important to THEM. It makes them feel loved and happy.

Yes, I've had to change my view of Valentine's Day a little bit…and, yes, we are starting a new tradition in our family quite late (my oldest is heading to college this year) but I decided that it's never too late to start a new family tradition.

To start off my Valetine's Day prep this year, I designed Valentine’s Day Cards for each of my kids at Treat.com. It couldn't have been easier to design the cards. I was able to find cards for each of my kids that fit their personalities, then add personalized messages inside (among other special touches). See how easy it is to personalize greeting cards at Treat?

I started by visiting Treat.com, where I selected Valentine's Day (they have other special occassions, too, for all-year-long card giving):

I then selected who I was designing for (him, her, daughter, husband, friends, etc) to narrow down the designs:

I then chose the perfect cards for each of my kids, like the elephant and cat Valentine for my oldest daughter (you have no idea how perfect it was – her two favorite animals!). I added personalized details, like her name, a message for inside the card, etc.

Once my five cards were finished, I added them to my cart, finished the easy check out process, and sat back, pleased with myself. I was shocked when the cards were delivered just a few days later. So fast! I am so pleased with how the finished cards turned out!

What is Treat?

At Treat.com, you can create one-of-a-kind personalized greeting cards from your computer or iPhone. It only takes a couple of minutes, and they will print and mail the cards for you. You can choose to have your cards delivered straight to the recipient or have your cards delivered (with envelopes) to your house for those cards you'd rather hand-deliver. Treat also has personalized Photo Gifts for those people on your list that need something more than a card.

Cards at Treat.com are highly personalized – you can add a photo, edit text and put special touches throughout the card, from the front to the back. They'll even send you reminders when special occassions are coming up if you'd like so you don't have to miss any birthdays or anniversaries again.

my mom always bought me a few candies and a card for valentine’s, and so I always bought my daughter a gift, too. she’s 18 now, and though I’m not sure what I’ll give her this year, but last year I got her a giant floppy pink stuffed dog. it’s fun to have an excuse to do something a little extra for your loved ones!
